389 Portraits (2020) was my first experience in undertaking an art residency. I was given full use of 389 Gallery in Chiayi City, Taiwan. It is a recently renovated art space that was repaired using locally sourced, reused building materials. The Gallery director instructed me to work any method I desired, as long as I responded to the space I was provided. I chose to open the gallery for members of the public to have their portraits drawn and exhibited. I felt this was the best way I could engage with the community and utilise the space. I found that installing the portraits and reacting to the space was almost as rewarding as drawing the portraits themselves.
