Outline
This course invites you to gain insight into the world of animation. Over a four week period, participants will be shown a curated series of films that chart the progression of the versatile medium of animation. We will begin by looking back to the early 20th century, where the craft of animation was developed and refined, and over four weeks make our way to the present day industry. Both mainstream feature films and independent short films will be analysed to take in the full spectrum of animation's rich history.
We will also use animation as a lens with which to view wider cultural issues. Investigating topics such as the value of storytelling, the line between art and entertainment, and how industry adapts to new technologies. Each lesson will begin by viewing a work of animation that introduces a topic for further discussion. You will be challenged with creative concepts that should provide stimulating conversation, and expose participants to new ideas and vocabulary.
Undertaking this course will give you a chance to view and discuss intriguing material that you may otherwise never be exposed to, whilst sparking interesting conversations and providing a greater understanding of the art of animation.
